Signs your shingles need attention

  • Curling, cupping or cracking — common after 15–20 years of freeze-thaw cycling
  • Granule loss in eavestroughs — UV breakdown accelerating toward failure
  • Missing shingles or exposed decking after wind events — infiltration risk within 24–48 hours
  • Recurring interior leaks that can’t be traced to a single entry point
  • Visible sagging, soft spots or interior staining below the roofline

Our installation process, step by step

  1. Full tear-off and inspection of the roof deck for soft spots, rot and moisture damage
  2. Decking repair as needed — replaced boards documented in writing
  3. Self-adhering ice and water shield along all eaves (min. 900 mm past the interior wall), in valleys and around penetrations
  4. Breathable synthetic underlayment over the full deck
  5. Starter strip at all eaves and rakes (a manufacturer requirement)
  6. Shingle installation to manufacturer nailing-pattern specs for the wind-uplift zone
  7. Step and counter-flashing at all chimneys, dormers and wall intersections
  8. Ridge cap installation with ventilation confirmed and/or upgraded
  9. Full site cleanup — all debris removed and nails swept with a magnetic roller
  10. Final inspection and walkthrough with the homeowner

A father-and-son, GAF-certified crew

No subcontracting, no shortcuts — every crew member is part of our team. We use GAF and Owens Corning products exclusively, with manufacturer warranties of up to 50 years that transfer to new owners when you sell.

We’re also your full exterior partner: if a roof project reveals damaged soffits, fascia or eavestroughs, we handle those too — reducing the number of contractors and mobilizations your home needs.

As a GAF Certified Preferred Contractor, we’ve met the strict criteria of one of Canada’s leading shingle manufacturers, and we keep that standing through ongoing training in the GAF learning program.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between 3-tab and architectural shingles?

3-tab shingles are flat and uniform — the entry-level option. Architectural (laminated) shingles are thicker, dimensionally varied and carry warranties up to 50 years. Most Ontario homeowners now specify architectural for the combination of looks and durability.

How long does shingle installation take?

Most residential re-roofs complete in one to two days depending on size, pitch and weather. We provide a clear schedule before starting.

Can you repair a few shingles without replacing the whole roof?

Yes — targeted repair is the right call when damage is isolated and surrounding shingles are structurally sound. We match existing profiles and colours as closely as possible.

What shingle brands does MKT Roofing use?

GAF and Owens Corning exclusively — two of North America’s most trusted manufacturers, with industry-leading warranty programs transferable to future homeowners.

Does ice and water shield make a difference in Ontario?

Significantly. Ontario’s freeze-thaw cycles and ice damming create conditions where standard underlayment is insufficient at the eaves and valleys, so we always install self-adhering ice and water shield well beyond the code minimum.
